On 16 September, TEMA – Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation hosted the TEchMA 2026 Conference – Engineering Sustainable Futures: Materials, Systems and Technologies for Society, bringing together 101 participants at the University of Aveiro's Academic Ceremonies Hall.
Throughout a day dedicated to knowledge exchange, scientific discussion, and interaction between academia and industry, the programme highlighted the role of engineering in addressing the challenges of sustainability and technological transformation.
The conference featured two distinguished plenary sessions. The opening scientific keynote was delivered by Ricardo Rodrigues Pinto, an orthopaedic surgeon and researcher in the fields of spinal disorders and regenerative medicine, who presented the lecture “Pain, Certainty and the Language of Medicine”. His presentation offered an inspiring reflection on medical practice, communication, and decision-making in healthcare.
In the afternoon, Antonis Sapountzis, an expert in innovation and technology transfer at AUSTRALO (Spain), delivered the plenary lecture “Lab-to-Market Value Chain”, exploring the challenges and opportunities associated with knowledge valorisation and the transformation of scientific research into solutions with economic and societal impact.
The programme also included a dedicated session showcasing TEMA's flagship research projects (Spotlight on TEMA Research), alongside oral presentations and poster sessions that demonstrated the diversity and quality of the research conducted within the centre and its collaborative network.
One of the most engaging moments of the conference was the Industry Round Table, which brought together representatives from Bosch, Bondalti, Sondar, and Solzaima. The discussion fostered an open dialogue on innovation, knowledge transfer, and the current challenges facing industry.
The 2026 edition also held special significance as it marked TEMA's 30th anniversary, celebrating three decades of research, innovation, and scientific collaboration in service of society.
