Pride at TEMA!
João Paulo Davim, Professor and Researcher at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the University of Aveiro (UA), and an integrated member of TEMA, was honored on National Engineer’s Day, November 22, with the title of Engineering Counselor, the highest professional qualification awarded by the Portuguese Engineers Association to one of its peers, in recognition of the excellence and impact of his academic and scientific career.
It is worth noting that the researcher from the Center for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA) at UA has also received other prestigious distinctions from international professional associations: in 2019, he was elected Fellow (FIET) of the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) in London, an institution with a long history and worldwide reputation in engineering and technology, whose patron is King Charles III; more recently, in early 2025, he was elected Fellow (FIMF) of the IMF (Institute of Materials Finishing) in Birmingham, an institution with a century-old tradition in surface engineering and materials finishing.
In 2025, João Paulo Davim ranked first nationally among the 710 scientists listed across all scientific fields working in Portugal, considering his entire career, in the “Stanford World's Top 2% Scientists” ranking – Elsevier.
He also ranked 1st in Portugal and 82nd worldwide in the 2025 edition of the Ranking of Best Scientists in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He was additionally honored with the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Leader Award for 2025. This ranking is compiled by Research.com, a leading academic platform for researchers worldwide.
In 2023, he had already been the highest-ranked Portuguese researcher working in Portugal across all research areas, and also the best positioned considering his entire career, in the “World’s Top 2% Scientists 2024” ranking, prepared by Stanford University/Elsevier.
João Paulo Davim is a Full Professor at UA and has an extensive teaching and research career spanning more than 35 years.
