UT Austin Portugal highlights project led by Cláudia Lopes as an example of research-driven innovation
Research carried out at TEMA – Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation is continuing to create impact beyond academia. The UT Austin Portugal Program recently featured NeuroMech Systems, a new venture that emerged from the scientific and technological advances achieved through the NanoPower exploratory research project, led by Cláudia Lopes, Assistant Researcher at TEMA, University of Aveiro.
Supported by the UT Austin Portugal Program, NanoPower focused on the high-precision mapping of neuromuscular activity through the development of advanced sensing technologies, including high-density surface electromyography sensors based on flexible and biocompatible nano-electrodes.
The scientific and technological advances achieved through the project laid the foundations for NeuroMech Systems, which is currently developing person-centred biofeedback and neuromuscular monitoring solutions with potential applications in healthcare, rehabilitation, sports performance, and wellness. The company currently has two prototypes under testing for neuromuscular monitoring and biofeedback applications.
According to the UT Austin Portugal Program, NeuroMech Systems represents an example of how exploratory research can evolve into entrepreneurial initiatives with societal and economic relevance, creating pathways for translating scientific knowledge into real-world solutions.
This recognition also highlights TEMA's commitment to excellent research, technology transfer, and innovation in areas such as biomedical engineering, digital health, and advanced sensing technologies.
