Paula Marques graduated from the University of Aveiro (UA) in Portugal with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1993, an MSc in Chemistry and Physics Teaching in 1997, and a PhD in Materials Science Engineering with a focus on Biomaterials in 2003. After completing her undergraduate studies, she was offered a research position at UA's Chemistry Department. While concurrently pursuing her Master's degree, she served as an assistant lecturer, teaching chemistry laboratory courses.

In 2007, she was granted a Ciência 2007 contract at UA's Mechanical Engineering Department, progressing to Principal Investigator (IF) in 2014 and attaining a tenured position in 2019. Leading the establishment of the "Nanotechnology Research Division," she faced exceptional challenges, fostering its substantial growth and strengthening the excellence of UA's Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA) research unit. Her research interests primarily focus on applying nanotechnology solutions to environmental and medical contexts. She led various national and international projects, the most notable being the coordination of the H2020-FETOPEN project NeuroStimSpinal (April 2019–September 2023), highlighting her leadership in pioneering research.

Starting in May 2024, she assumed the role of Coordinator for the TEMA research unit. In addition, she occupies an elected position on the UA Scientific Council. In addition, she actively participates in the management of the doctoral programme in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology. During the last five years, she has instructed three curricular units in the second and third cycles of studies.
