Antonio C. M. Sousa received his MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Thermal-Fluids) from the Victoria University of Manchester (UMIST), England, UK, in 1974 and 1976, respectively. Prior to his graduate studies he had three years of academic and industrial activity. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Brasília, Brazil soon after the award of his PhD degree, first as Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies and later on as Acting Chair. Late in 1977, he moved, as Senior Engineer and Head of the Thermal-Fluids Division of the Fuel Department, to the Brazilian Nuclear Companies, SA, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He participated in the First Fuel Reload Project of Angra I Westinghouse 600 MWe PWR. After the project was successfully completed in 1980, he took an Associate Professorship with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada; in 1985 he was promoted to Full Professor.

In 2010 became a Full Professor at University of Aveiro on a full-time basis and from 2011 to 2015 he served as Director of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. From 2016 on, he has maintained close collaboration with the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion – Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), while remaining a member of the R&D Unit of the University of Aveiro. At CAS, from May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018, he was Presidential Initiative Fellow and Visiting Professor, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and since then Senior Consultant.

He is or was a member of several editorial boards, among others:

• Member, Editorial Board, Proceedings A, Royal Society, UK (Jan. 2008- Dec. 2013).

His research interests deal with heat transfer enhancement using nanofluids, Li-ion batteries thermal management, and renewable energy with particular emphasis on geothermal and solar energy. The research work has been conducted using experiments and numerical simulation. He successfully developed along with his research team computational tools capable of capturing multi-physics and multi-scale phenomena including material thermal characterization and multiphase flows with heat transfer.

His research was continuously supported over 30 years by NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) through 2 five-year Discovery grants, 5 three-year operating grants, 1 four-year operating grant, 3 strategic grants, and 1 Collaborative University (25%)/Industry R&D grant (C$ 500 k). In addition, he conducted contracted research with numerous agencies and companies being the most relevant AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada Limited), Energy Systems Associates, NB Power (New Brunswick Power Corporation), SIGTTO (The Society of International Gas Tankers and Terminal Operators) and Transport Canada. Research funding was also received from agencies in Italy, Macau, Portugal and Slovenia. Specifically, in Portugal he was PI of three FCT projects (POCTI/EME/36263/2000, POCTI/EME/59728/2004, and PTDC/EME-MFE/105031/2008), in addition, five postdoctoral researchers working under his supervision received PD grants from FCT.

He successfully supervised or co-supervised 19 PhD theses, 12 Master theses (UNB) and 4 Master dissertations (UA).

In professional terms, he is an Honorary Member of the Italian Society of Thermo-fluid Dynamics, a European Engineer, a Fellow and an Energy Expert of the Portuguese Order of Engineers.
