X Ray Laboratory

Competencies

Responsible Researcher: Isabel Duarte

The X‑Ray Laboratory (LRX) specializes in structural and chemical characterization techniques for metallic, ceramic, polymeric, composite and biological materials, operating in full compliance with Radiological Protection standards.

Core Competencies

  • X‑ray micro‑computed tomography (micro‑CT) for high‑resolution, non‑destructive 3D analysis, including porosity and phase‑distribution studies.
  • X‑ray diffraction (XRD) for crystalline‑phase identification and structural analysis, including residual‑stress measurements and crystallographic texture analysis (pole‑figure acquisition).
  • X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) for surface chemical analysis, including coatings and thin films.
  • Characterization of structural materials, functional materials and biomaterials.
  • Support for advanced training and research, including characterization studies and analytical support.
  • Specialized services for industry, research units and collaborative projects.

Equipment

  • Bruker SkyScan 1275 – 3D X‑ray micro‑tomograph
  • Rigaku SmartLab – X‑ray diffractometer
  • SPECS XPS/AES – multi‑technique system for surface chemical analysis
