Investigation Lines

1. Manufacturing Processes & Simulation

Advancing research and innovation in key enabling technologies, particularly Advanced Manufacturing Technologies. This line of work explores innovative methods for transforming raw materials and components into new products, drawing on both conventional manufacturing approaches and cutting‑edge scientific developments.

It promotes the development and use of physical and virtual manufacturing tools to support product design and optimise production cycles.

Its strategic impact spans several areas, including digital and additive manufacturing, sustainable and reliable joining of multimaterial structures, manufacturing of multifunctional and cellular materials, advanced injection moulding, rapid‑manufacturing tooling, and automation and robotics systems for industrial processes.

2. Nanoengineering & Bio-Inspired Manufacturing

Focusing on nanoengineering and bio‑inspired manufacturing, this research line integrates biomanufacturing and bio‑inspired technologies across two central dimensions:

  • Advancing biomanufacturing processes using biological materials.
  • Applying bio‑inspired engineering principles to design efficient, optimised products, with particular emphasis on nanofabrication techniques and the development of nanomodular systems.

3. Manufacturing for the Circular Economy

Driving the development of manufacturing solutions that foster sustainable growth by aligning industrial, environmental, climate and energy priorities.

This research line supports the transition to a circular economy, where the value of products and materials is retained for as long as possible, generating both economic and environmental benefits. Key areas include low‑impact energy technologies, systems engineering for clean and renewable energy manufacturing, recyclable engineering materials, and improved management of manufacturing and transport processes.
