Tiago Santos holds a PhD in Physics Engineering (2020) and a Master’s degree in Physics Engineering (2008) from the University of Aveiro. His doctoral work focused on alternative methods based on microwave radiation for thermal processing of materials.
He has been a researcher at the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP), Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, and at I3N, CICECO, and TEMA at the University of Aveiro. He has published several articles in specialized peer-reviewed journals, authored 2 book chapters, holds 3 registered patents, and has participated as a Research Fellow in 4 scientific and industrial projects and 2 postdoctoral projects, as well as a Junior Researcher in 2 projects. His work includes modeling and computational simulation of thermal, fluidic, magnetic, and electromagnetic processes, complemented by experimental analysis using infrared thermography, including contributions within projects such as Heat@UA and Smart Green Homes (SGH), with applications to advanced thermal systems (e.g., magnetic heat pumps).
His main research activity has focused on microwave processing of materials, particularly clay-based ceramics such as porcelain and stoneware. He has been involved in industrial projects (e.g., Greenwave and CerWave) aimed at developing hybrid microwave furnaces and tunnel kilns for porcelain firing, contributing to simulation, construction, and process optimization.
Currently, he is a contracted researcher at I3N (Department of Physics, University of Aveiro), working on the ProfitWave project, focused on the development of novel microwave-based pasteurization technologies for fruit juices. His current interests center on microwave-material interactions, process optimization, and thermal analysis applied to food processing.
He has also previously worked on numerical modeling of electrospinning processes for biophysical applications. In parallel, he has a growing interest in the thermal behavior of natural and agglomerated cork as a sustainable insulating material.
