Pedro Prates is Professor Auxiliar at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro (DEM-UA) since 2021, where he also serves as Director of the Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering since 2023 and as Deputy Director for Teaching and Research at DEM-UA since 2024. He completed a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2014 at the University of Coimbra, an Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering in 2010 from the University of Coimbra, and a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2007 from the Abrantes Higher School of Technology (Tomar Polytechnic Institute). He is an Integrated Researcher at the Center for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA) R&D unit; he is also coordinator of thematic line TL1 - Innovative and Sustainable Industries of the Associated Laboratory LASI. His research is mainly focused on applied and computational mechanics, namely numerical simulation of sheet metal forming processes, inverse strategies for identifying material parameters, process design and optimization under uncertainties, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and machine learning applications in applied and computational mechanics. The work developed resulted in more than 100 publications, including 80+ publications in international journals, most of them in Q1 and Q2 journals. He is a guest editor in one international journal and has served as reviewer for 40+ international journals. He successfully supervised 2 PhD students and is currently supervising 3 PhD students. He supervised and co-supervised 40+ MSc dissertations. He received 6 awards and / or honors. He has been involved in several funded research projects, including EU projects, national FCT projects, and industry-driven initiatives (ANI), acting as Principal Investigator in national projects.
