Nelson Amadeu Dias Martins is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Aveiro (UA). He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering / Applied Thermodynamics from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. Since 1999, he has taught energy-related subjects in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UA, with an emphasis on energy management, HVAC systems, and industrial refrigeration.

He was the promoter and, over various periods since their creation, has served as director of the postgraduate course in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies, the Master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Systems, and the Doctoral Programme in Energy Systems and Climate Change. He is currently Deputy Coordinator of TEMA (Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation – a UA research unit rated Excellent), where he is responsible for fostering collaboration between TEMA and the business sector.

His research is conducted at the Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA) and the Associate Laboratory for Intelligent Systems (LASI). He is a founding member of giSES (Research Group on Sustainable Energy Systems), with R&D interests focused on Sustainable Energy Systems and is particularly dedicated to research in computational and experimental heat transfer, flow simulation (CFD), energy efficiency in industry, and monitoring and diagnostics of energy systems, especially in industrial and building contexts.

He is the author and/or co-author of approximately 100 publications in international scientific journals, books, public technical reports, and conference proceedings. Between 2005 and 2009, he served as the Portuguese Delegate to the European Commission’s Committee on Energy and Sustainable Development.

He is a qualified expert in the Portuguese Building Energy Certification System (SCE) in the fields of energy and indoor air quality (PQ196) and industry (SGCIE) (TR743). He is also a Certified International Expert (CMVP) under the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP).

At present, he is a member of the following organisations: TEMA (Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation), LASI (Associate Laboratory for Intelligent Systems), Portuguese Engineers’ Society (Senior Member), Portuguese Society of Metrology, Portuguese Society of Qualified Experts, and the International Association of Energy Engineers. He is also Research Field Coordinator for Sustainable Development within the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), and the University of Aveiro’s representative on the Advisory Board of the Portuguese National Observatory for Energy Poverty (ONPE-PT). Currently, he is involved as a researcher or coordinator in several national and international R&D and consultancy projects in applied CFD, air quality, and energy performance simulation of thermal systems. He also evaluates projects and funding applications under contract to IAPMEI, ANI, the Portuguese Environmental Fund, the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR), and the HORIZON-EIC-2025-ACCELERATOR programme.
