Fábio Fernandes is an assistant professor with a PhD in mechanical engineering. He is a researcher at TEMA in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2017 from the University of Aveiro. Until June 2019, he had a postdoc position at UA, working in the product design and manufacturing of novel products for the lighting industry. From June 2019 until June 2021, he was a Junior Researcher under FTC grant CEECIND/01192/2017 (GREENSIDE - Green and advanced manufacturing, simulation and design to improve safety devices), a grant awarded in the highly competitive CEEC 2017 (Ranked 2nd in the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Systems). Since then, he has also been actively involved in innovative technological challenges such as laser welding, marking and processing of several materials. Since 2013, he has been an active author with more than 100 publications indexed in SCOPUS. He recently co-edited the book “Advanced Welding Technologies: Bridging Theory, Practice, and Innovations in Fusion, Solid-State, and Beyond”. He has >1800 citations and an h-index of 24 (Scopus). Since 2018 he has supervised 61 MSc students, 7 PhD students, 2 Postdocs / junior researchers. Fábio Fernandes participated in over 25 R&D projects (10 in cooperation with industry), and 4 international, being the local PI of 2 European project (ERASMUS+) and 1 ECIU, and 4 national projects (FCT PeX 2022 and 2023; and 2 proofs of concept). In both FCT calls of 2022 and 2023, SUSTAIN-E and LASEMORPH proposals ranked first in the panel Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Systems, the latter with a perfect grade, 9.0/9.0. Due to the rules, the PI could not apply for funding in the next call (2024) and is eligible only now for the 2025 call. Since 2022, he is responsible for the Welding Quality Assurance and Control course taught to students of the Master in Welding Engineering and the Graduate Specialisation Programme in Welding Quality Management Course. Currently he is also the responsible for the following courses: Welding Advanced Processes; Simulation of Welding Processes; Welding and Inspection Laboratories; Joining Processes; Welding Practice; and Technology of Joining Processes. The latter is taught to more than 100 students/semester. Since 2022, I have been a member of the American Welding Society (AWS), and since 2024, a member of the European Society for Composite Materials (ESCM) and the European Association for the Promotion of Research into the Dynamic Behaviour of Materials and its Applications (DYMAT). In 2025, FF has been nominated as the Quality Coordinator of the Mechanical Testing Laboratory, having a role in its certification following the NP EN ISO 9001:2015 standard. He also has registered inventions in the form of intellectual property from patents to models, highlighting the recent granted European patent regarding laser joining of morphologically dissimilar polymers (EP4197752B1). His work has been recognised with prestigious awards and honours, e.g. the 2017 Mário Quartin Graça Scientific award by his PhD work, and more recently, the invention Flattie resulted in the 8th edition of BfK Ideas, BikeUp, and the James Dyson (national) awards, and iF Product Design Award. His work has been highlighted several times in National TVs (RTP1, SIC, SIC Notícias, SIC Internacional; Porto Canal), radio (Antena 1) and several newspapers/magazines (Jornal de Negócios, Público, Revista Exame Informática, Jornal de Notícias, Expresso).
