Dr. Duncan Fagg is currently a Principal Investigator of the centre for mechanical technology and automation (TEMA) in the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He has over 25 years of research experience with previous placements in CICECO Aveiro, Portugal, Institute of Ceramics and Glass, (CSIC), Madrid, Spain, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, Patras Greece, School of Chemistry, St-Andrews University, Scotland, and Risø DTU National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, Roskilde Denmark.

The focus of his work is the conversion of intermittent renewable energies into chemical products, such as hydrogen or synthetic hydrocarbons, their storage and their later reconversion to electricity in fuel cells. Work encompasses the design of devices and materials for batteries, solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOEC), solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), hydrogen separation membranes and hydrogen storage.

He has successfully supervised 9 PhDs and 13 MScs and led 9 National and International projects in these topics. He has been on the jury of over 20 PhD and MSc degrees, in President and evaluator roles, both nationally and internationally. He has published 16 book chapters and >190 publications in international peer review journals and has an H-factor of 40. He is leading author of 4 patents on solid state technologies for energy conversion. During his time as an Investigator in the University of Aveiro, D.Fagg has won >3MEuros in project funding as lead researcher, from which he has constructed a laboratory of excellence in electrochemical testing of technologies in the energy field.

He is an Associate Editor for the Journal Fuel Cells (specialty section of Frontiers in Energy Research). He is the Director of the Doctoral program in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology (2024 onwards) and currently a Vice Director of the TEMA research unit (2025 onwards), at the University of Aveiro.
